Texas backers of bringing the $1 billion experimental coal-fired FutureGen electrical plant to the Permian Basin will dance the "Texas Two-Step" to make it happen.
Competing against the Southeast Texas coal-mining town of Jewett and the railroad centers of Mattoon and Tuscola, Ill., regional efforts to put the plant north of the 1930s oilfield ghost town of Penwell were boosted at a Tuesday powwow in Washington. Penwell is 20 miles west of Odessa.

When retail behemoth Wal-Mart announced its intention to construct a new supermarket off Interstate 20, many South Side residents were elated by the prospect of a ripple effect that would stimulate economic activity, while some local business owners feared the potential consequences of competing with the nation's largest retailer.
Isett’s Taxpayer Protection Act to be filed again
According to a news release from State Representative Carl Isett (R-Lubbock), the Lubbock legislator will file his Taxpayer Protection Act for the fourth session in a row. The Taxpayer Protection Act is the basis for one of the recommendations in the report by the Governor’s Task Force on Appraisal Reform.The report recommends lowering the allowable increase in tax revenues received by local governments from 8% to 5% of last year's revenues.
Perry calls for deeper tax cuts
The state surplus has hit $8.2 billion, an amount so large that it could tempt lawmakers to forego a major tax overhaul as they begin a special session today focused on paying for school finance.
